Project Overview

Here's a short synopsis of the project, with links to relevant workspaces.

Concept

The Concept team was tasked with composing a guiding idea for the proposed exhibit about Advice, along with a summary of the exhibit, visitor goals, and a description of specific exhibit components. The Concept team brainstormed a variety of Big Ideas for the exhibit, which were then weeded down and voted on until we composed "Advice: Give it, Get it, Flip it, Fuck it."

Once the Big Idea was established, the details of the exhibit were developed through a continue brainstorm and discussion, with the goal of consensus and reasonability. Individual team members were responsible for tracking the discussion realative to their assigned topic (visitor goals, exhibit components, etc.) which were subsequently formalized in a written narrative on the Concept page.

There was some concern over the use of the word "fuck" in the exhibit concept. The Concept Team selected the word based on its particular meaning in realtion to advice (versus forget or reject), and because the team felt that it would resonante with undergraduates at the University, which were our primary audience.

Interaction Plan

The interactives team invented, managed and troubleshot all the various interactive elements of both the brick-and-mortar exhibit and all web components based upon the vision created by the concept team and feedback from the class as a whole. We wanted to create interactive elements that would present visitors with a variety of levels of interaction, knowing that levels of comfortability with both talking to strangers and contributing content vary greatly. Based upon the notion of advice, we created several interactives (detailed at the link above) that would allow visitors to give, receive, re-mix and comment upon advice in a variety of media. We were particularly interested in using analog models of web-based social media in the exhibit, and crosslinking content from the physical exhibit and the tumblr page.

Graphic Design

The graphic design team collaborated to create the look and feel, as well as signage for the Advice Exhibit. After the Concept team decided on a Big Idea the Graphic Design brainstormed then narrowed down look and feel ideas to three concepts: Carnival, Navigational, New Yorker Cartoon.

Each concept was roughly developed and presented to the class for review.  Then the class voted for a concept that would best represent our Big Idea and allow for modification during a mid-exhibition evaluation. The New Yorker Cartoon was chosen and worked with the Content Team to design our tumblr masthead, buttons, fliers, banners, and labels for the exhibit.

For the exhibit, Graphic Design broke the fabrication of print materials down into tasks relating to theme.  For example, one person on the graphic design team designed all the labels and another person designed the banners.  This ensured design consistency through out the five interactives.

Because we chose a “cartoony” look and feel, it was easy to amend the exhibit labels with sharpies and sticky notes after the class evaluated which interactive were working and which could use better direction.  Additionally, a cartoony script helped imply that the “voice of authority” was less authoritative and more collaborative.  We intended this would help lower the barrier of participation.

Fabrication

The fabrication portion of the Advice Exhibition was fairly quick and dirty. With all the members of the fabrication team deeply involved in other elements of the design process we were able to craft a good idea of what people wanted in the space and how these ideas could work within the restrictions of the space. Working with other groups we were able to get a floor plan together and a list of items/materials that needed to be purchased or fabricated. This list was then divided up into Graphic Design Duty, and then handled by the GD team with class help, and fabrication duty. With this list we were able to sequentially track and buy items that we needed prior to the fabrication date.  After meeting to go over design for the crafts of actually objects the materials were purchased, built, and installed over a one week period. Purchased items were brought to the student center to be kept with other GD and GA items and the fabricated pieces were transported to the site on the install date.
